Plastic Materials for CNC Machining
One hub for the stocks PlasticCNCPro machines every week—commodity plastics, engineering polymers, high-performance grades, fluoropolymers, and specialty compounds. Jump by family, compare typical use cases, then open a material page for machining notes and a quote.
Engineering plastics, cut to print—without a mold
Material choice drives tolerance capability, surface quality, chemical life, and cost. PlasticCNCPro sources plate and rod stock matched to your callout (or recommends an equivalent), then programs feeds, tools, and workholding for that polymer—not a one-size metal playbook. Use this page to shortlist a family, then open the grade page for applications and RFQ details.

How to choose a CNC plastic
Start with the duty cycle, then filter by machinability and stock availability. Share drawings early—we flag unrealistic callouts before you buy expensive blanks.
1. Temperature & load
Continuous service temperature and mechanical load separate commodity (ABS, PP, PE) from engineering (POM, nylon, UHMW) and high-performance (PEEK, PEI, PPS) families.
2. Chemicals & media
Acids, solvents, steam, and cleaners often point to fluoropolymers (PTFE, PFA, PVDF) or chemically resistant engineering grades. Tell us the media and concentration.
3. Wear & friction
Sliding and bearing duty favors POM/Delrin, UHMW, oil-filled nylon, PTFE, and filled PEEK. Pair material with geometry so thin walls do not chatter.
4. Dimensional stability
Moisture-sensitive nylons move after machining; soft PTFE and UHMW need generous process windows. Stable grades (POM, PEEK) hold tighter fits more reliably.
5. Compliance & additives
Food-contact, medical-grade, ESD/antistatic, flame-retardant, glass- or carbon-filled—use the Specialty section when the datasheet, not just the base polymer, matters.
6. Cost vs. volume
CNC wins for prototypes and low-volume production. Expensive high-performance blanks are worth it when temperature or chemicals require them—not as a default for every fixture.
Material families at a glance
High-level comparison for shortlisting—not a datasheet substitute. Confirm grade, fillers, and critical dims on your RFQ.
| Family | Typical strengths | Watch-outs | Example grades |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commodity | Low cost, easy to source, good for guards, panels, tanks, general fixtures | Lower heat & strength ceilings; some grades soft or notch-sensitive | ABS, PMMA, PC, PVC, PP, PE |
| Engineering | Wear, stiffness, machinability for precision mechanical parts | Nylon moisture swell; UHMW soft & abrasive on tools | POM, Delrin®, PA66, UHMW |
| High-performance | High temp, strength, dielectric & chemical balance | Higher blank cost; needs correct tooling & stress management | PEEK, PEI, PPS, PAI, PI |
| Fluoropolymers | Chemical inertness, low friction, wide temp span | Soft/creep (esp. PTFE); tight tolerances need process care | PTFE, PFA, PVDF, FEP, ETFE |
| Specialty | ESD, medical, food-contact, filled, FR, wear-tuned stocks | Specify certification & filler %; abrasive fills wear tools faster | ESD-safe, medical-grade, glass-/carbon-filled, TPU/TPE |

Plastic materials FAQ
Practical answers buyers ask before locking a polymer for CNC.
Yes—when the blank is clearly labeled and large enough for workholding and finish size. Send grade, dimensions, and any certificate requirements with the RFQ. We can also purchase equivalent plate or rod when you prefer a single-source build.
General features often land around ±0.05 mm on stable grades such as POM or PEEK when process controls support it. Soft fluoropolymers and UHMW usually need wider bands. We confirm critical dimensions before production—see also notes on the CNC services page.
Common grades (ABS, PC, POM, nylon, UHMW, PTFE, PEEK, PEI, and others) are routinely available through our supply network. Exotic or certified lots may add lead time—flag FDA, USP, ESD, or lot-trace needs on the quote request.
Glass and carbon fills raise stiffness and often heat resistance, but they are abrasive on cutters and can leave a different surface texture. We adjust tooling and speeds accordingly—see Specialty cards for glass-filled and carbon-fiber-reinforced options.
Open the material page or use the form below. Attach 2D/3D files, call out the polymer (or acceptable alternates), quantity, and critical tolerances. PlasticCNCPro typically responds within one business day with pricing and a lead-time window.
