Custom Plastic Gibs for Machinery and Automation

PlasticCNCPro machines plastic gibs to drawing specifications for equipment builders and OEMs. These linear guides reduce friction, absorb wear, and maintain alignment in slides, carriages, and linear motion assemblies.

What Plastic Gibs Are and Where They Fit

Plastic gibs serve as adjustable or fixed wear strips that take sliding contact in machine ways, dovetail slides, and linear bearings. They replace metal gibs where lubrication is limited, corrosion is a concern, or noise reduction matters.

  • Press slides

Low-friction wear surfaces on reciprocating slides.

  • Conveyor tracks

Wear strips that protect rails and reduce noise.

  • Positioning stages

Alignment control in dovetail and linear ways.

CNC Processes Used for Plastic Gibs

We start with extruded or cast plastic stock and remove material through milling, turning, and secondary operations. Slots, T-nuts, mounting holes, and angled faces are cut in one or two setups. Threaded inserts or captive hardware can be added when the design requires it. Each batch receives in-process checks for flatness, parallelism, and slot width.

Step 01

Stock preparation

Extruded or cast plastic blanks selected and squared for machining.

Step 02

Milling and turning

Slots, angled faces, and T-nut profiles cut in one or two setups.

Step 03

Secondary operations

Mounting holes, threaded inserts, and captive hardware added on request.

Step 04

In-process inspection

Flatness, parallelism, and slot width verified on every batch.

Materials We Run for Gib Applications

We review each application for PV limits, temperature range, and required surface finish before recommending stock.

POM / Acetal

Low moisture absorption and good dimensional stability for precision ways.

UHMW-PE

High-load, low-speed sliding with minimal abrasion on contact faces.

Nylon 6 & 66

Toughness for impact zones and shock-loaded slide interfaces.

PTFE & PVDF

Selected for chemical exposure and aggressive media environments.

Glass / carbon reinforced

Increased stiffness to hold deflection below 0.05 mm under load.

Application review

PV limits, temperature range, and finish requirements checked before quoting.

Tolerances and Surface Requirements

Critical dimensions ±0.05 mm
Non-critical features ±0.1 mm
Locating faces (tight) ±0.02 mm
Sliding face roughness Ra 1.6 µm or better

Tighter work reaches ±0.02 mm on locating faces when the material and geometry allow. Parts can be supplied with ground or polished contact surfaces when the drawing specifies.

Part Sizes and Production Volumes

Length range: from 20 mm wear pads up to 1200 mm machine ways.

Wall thickness: 3 mm for light-duty parts, up to 50 mm for heavy slides.

Order volume: five-piece prototype sets through 500-piece repeat runs.

Tooling: limited to standard cutters, so setup costs stay low even for one-off designs.

Design and Material Selection Support

Send a 2D drawing or 3D model with the intended load, speed, and environment. Feedback arrives within one business day for most inquiries.

Submit Your Drawing

Thin-section review

We flag thin sections that may distort during machining or under load.

Material swaps

Suggestions when the original grade shows creep or wear concerns.

Geometry advice

Recommended radii and chamfers that reduce stress concentrations.

Fast turnaround

Engineering feedback returned within one business day for most inquiries.

Quality and Documentation

Inspection reports

First-article inspection reports and dimensional data on key features ship with every order.

Material certificates

Certificates supplied for the polymer grades used in your gibs.

Export packaging

Foam separators and desiccant protect moisture-sensitive polymers. Lot numbers are recorded for traceability on production orders.
