Precision Polymer CNC Machining

Custom Plastic Lens Holders via CNC Machining

Plastic lens holders position and secure optical elements in equipment where metal parts would introduce conductivity, weight, or corrosion issues. CNC machining produces these holders directly from solid polymer stock, allowing non-standard diameters, mounting flanges, and thread patterns without tooling investment.

Machining Process for Polymer Lens Holders

A controlled sequence keeps the optical seat concentric with the mounting face.

  1. Roughing the outer diameter

CNC milling and turning remove material in controlled passes to establish the outer profile and mounting features.

  2. Boring the optical seat

The inner bore is bored to the required concentricity for accurate lens registration.

  3. Finishing threads, slots and holes

Drilling and tapping create attachment holes and set-screw locations; threads or slots are finished last. This supports both single prototypes and repeat batches where molded tooling is not yet justified.

Production Capabilities at PlasticCNCPro

We machine lens holders from stock shapes on 3- and 5-axis centers, holding bore diameters to ±0.05 mm and flange flatness to 0.03 mm.

Integrated Features

Threaded inserts or press-fit features can be added in the same setup.

Deburring & Polishing

Parts receive deburring and, when specified, light polishing on optical contact surfaces.

Dimensional Reports

Each order includes reports for critical features such as concentricity between bore and mounting face.

Prototype to Batch

From single prototypes to repeat production runs, without molded tooling investment.

Materials and Typical Specifications

Common polymers for lens holders along with achievable parameters. Customers specify material grade, color, and any antistatic or wear additives at quotation.

Material Max Service Temp (°C) Typical Tolerance (mm) Surface Finish (Ra µm) Common Lens Holder Uses
POM/Acetal 100 ±0.05 1.6 General automation mounts
PEEK 250 ±0.03 0.8 High-temperature or chemical exposure
PPS 220 ±0.05 1.6 Electrical insulation near optics
PTFE 260 ±0.08 3.2 Low-friction sliding or alignment rings
PEI 170 ±0.05 1.6 Transparent or high-strength applications

Project Fit and Design Considerations

Lens holders machined from engineering plastics suit equipment where weight reduction, electrical isolation, or chemical compatibility matters.

Prototypes

Allow verification of fit with specific lens diameters before committing to larger volumes.

Low-Volume Runs

Replace obsolete molded parts or support custom machinery builds.

GD&T Review

When drawings include callouts for perpendicularity or runout, we review manufacturability and suggest adjustments that maintain function while reducing cycle time.
